Beautiful dresses, beautiful poses, beautiful dance moves! The dancers were lively and energetic, and executed outstanding moves which, though the hall was less than half full, drew appreciative gasps and applause which more than made up for the lack of numbers.
The Kuala Lumpur Open Dance Championship, organised by World Dance Academy, was held at Wisma OCM on Sunday 13th June 2010. The competition started late due to some technical issues, but the working committee, led by Mistress of Ceremonies, Bronya Bishorek, ran the competition so efficiently that the day events ended ahead of time.
The day events were exciting in themselves; with events ranging from Beginner to Pre-Amateur to Senior over 45, the crowd responded readily to the modern and latin competitors as they fought to get into the finals, and thereafter to get the top placings.
As The Dance Directory representative, I took numerous photos of every round, and even snuck a few photos of some of the judges. The competitors did an excellent job, and many of them executed such picture perfect poses that made my role as a photographer easy.
The competition resumed in the evening with two opposing age categories; seniors over 55 in both the modern and latin categories, and then the crowd was treated to two young couples fighting it out in the latin Under-8 event. All four children were below the age of 8, but their determination matched even those in the open categories, and it showed in their faces and in their dancing.
There was a short break for the customary speeches of the organisers and supporting associations, and then each adjudicator was honoured by being individually called and presented with a token of appreciation.
As the night wore on, the events got more and more exciting, culminating with the highest levels of the competition - the Amateur Open events.
After that was the moment all dancers were waiting for... the results! The awards presentation was done swiftly and supporters stayed until the end to take photos of their favourites.
The Kuala Lumpur Open Dance Championship was a resounding success among its competitors, and it will be a competition that everyone will undoubtedly look forward to next year!
